Dark Hair: Six Reasons it'll Knock Their Socks Off

By Roy Caccamo on 2 June 2009

As part of his series "Hair Color Essentials", Rocco Starr explains six show stopping benefits of dark hair. You'll be surprised how dark hair is more than just a simple hair color!

Dark hair's striking. It can look so seductive, glossy and healthy. It can add an unmistakable mysterious quality to a person's image- a sophistication reminiscent of glamorous parties and stepping into moody restaurants from chauffeur driven black cars. Dark hair's also got an edginess that adds to its wearer's appeal a brooding and passionate effect. Whether it's a catwalk model or a crooning emofront man, dark hair's got something special everyone notices.

Dark hair is: Striking...

There's no denying that dark hair is noticeable in a really particular way. It's striking because it's subtle and understated; kind of like the appeal of a piece of chocolate versus a shot of tequila.

You don't believe me? Imagine an emo front man like Pete Wentzwith blonde hair, or Marilyn Manson. Their impact would be completely diluted. Dark hair promotes an intensity of image without being over the top.

Dark hair is: Healthy...

I've worked in a lot of salons, and on more than one occasion I've seen the driest, most terrible looking hair look a lot healthier when processed with a dark color; for example dark brown hair or a black color.

I'm not saying that dark haircures dry or damaged hair; I'm saying that dark hair color can camouflage damage really well. It's got something to do with the way light reflects off dark hair, making it seem glossy, shiny and healthy (especially on straight hair).

Dark hair is: Thick...

People with dark hair look like they've got thick, dense hair. Often naturally dark hair is in fact thicker, and this has got something to do with DNA and stuff, but a lot of the time it just looks thicker because of the type of pigment in the hair shaft.

It makes sense that if naturally dark hair looks nice and thick and dense, then artificially colored dark hair will have a similar effect. So if you want to accentuate the appearance of your hair's density, I recommend a dark hair color

Dark hair is: Flattering...

Dark hair can be great for promoting your best assets. It can be a really good way to highlight your eye shape and color, and if you've got a youthful, bright and blemish free complexion, dark hair can create an amazing contrast.

And I'm not talking about one kind of complexion either. Check outCatherine Zeta-Jones or Angelina Jolie. Both have different skin tones fair/cool and olive respectively), and dark hair looks just as good on both of them.

I bet you never realised that dark hair color can actually make some hairstyles look even better. Dark hair color can draw attention to the vertical lines of certain cuts, such as bobs , wedge cuts andgeometric cuts (one side is longer than the other), dramatically accentuating them. Even short crops tend to work better because the dark color works to promote their shape.

Dark hair is: Sexy...

Dark hair is sexy, just like black lace lingerie- and that old saying, "Tall, dark and handsome." Maybe it's got something to do with dark hair's relationship with night time, or its historical embodiment (in Hollywood movies) in femme fatales and mysterious, sexy strangers. It's not really my job to explain why, but take my word for it: dark hair is sexy.

Dark hair can look great, and if you think it's boring and conservative, that's totally not the case. Dark hair is classy, subtle and edgy; it's eye-catching and noticeable because it's not showy. It's brooding and compelling. And you don't have to be Angelina Jolie to make it work either; dark hair can look healthy and shiny on anyone, promoting shape and adding striking contrast

Top 10 Sexiest Dark Haired Celebrities

June 09, 2009 by

Raven Haired Celebrities

Black hair is usually a no-no for most people. It mostly looks too dark and Gothic, but if you have the right skin tone, you can pull it off like a pro....oh and yes, chicks with pale skin can pull of black hair as well.

I went from being a full blown blond to pure black, and I must say that even though it took some getting used to, I really love the results, and will likely keep my raven dark hair for quite some time. I never thought I could go from blond to black, but I am happy I gave it a try.
My inspiration to dyeing my hair pitch black though came after seeing a few celebrities sporting the deep dark locks.

My all time top favorites are as follows:

1. Krysten Ritter

This black haired beauty played Jane (Jessie's girlfriend) on the hit show Breaking Bad. Krysten was my inspiration to going deep black. I loved how the dark hair let her porcelain complexion shine through, and they way it made her eyes pop. Click here to view Krysten Ritter's gorgeous look.

2. Christina Ricci

Christina Ricci has been seen sporting all sorts of hair colors, but no hair color let her flawless complexion, and big doe eyes pop as beautifully as black hair does. Click here to view a stunning photo of Christina Ricci sporting her darkest of locks.

3. Wynonna Ryder

This dark star has always been one of my favorite actresses, it is just ashame that she barely has gotten any recognition since the whole shop lifting fiasco that tainted her career. Seriously though folks, if Lindsay Lohan is still popular for all of the antics she pulled, we should be willing to give Wynonna another shot!

At any rate, Wynonna has always looked her best when sporting short black hair, like in this photo.

5. Megan Fox

This dark haired stunner is by far (in my opinion) the sexiest celebrity right now. She is simply flawless (and reminds me a lot of the chick who plays Sara in the old hit movie Labyrinth, with David Bowie). Check out how stunning Megan Fox looks in this photo.

6. Jessica Stroup

This mini cutie plays Silver on the new 90210, and she is probably one of America's favorite characters on the show. I think it has a lot to do with her stunning tan and dark locks. What do you think? Click here to view this beauty.

7. Jared Leto

I bet you though only chicks would make this list. Initially that was how I was going to set it up, but then I got to thinking about my childhood celeb-crush Jared Leto, and without a doubt he had to make the list due to his dark locks and popping blue eyes. This hottie can be
seen here.

8. Courtney Cox

She has always been seen with black hair, and for good reasons. Courtney Cox is simply stunning with black hair, and she knows it! Click to view Cox's hot black locks.

9. Janice Dickinson

Love her or hate her, but you wish you could look as good as Janice does at her age! Janice has always been known to sport the raven locks, and she looks smoking hot doing so. Click to view Janice.

10. Mila Kunis

Last but surely not least is Mila. She managed to get people to fall in love with her by playing, the annoying, yet darling Jackie on That 70's Show. Check out Mila's smoking hot photo-shot here.

Angelina Jolie almost made the list, but she's just not that hot anymore.

Hottest Celebrity Hair Colors for 2009

July 15, 2009 by

Finally a year when we can finally put the bleach blond bimbo look to rest! Although the trend was hot, bleach blond hair is so out, and the fake tan, nails, and hair color hopefully won't resurrect any time soon. Although I admit I was once bleach blond, and loved the look. However, over the years I have seen this fashion do turn into a fashion don't, due to the misconception that near white hair was hot! Yech!

2009 finally stepped outside of the beach Barbie look, and stepped into a very bold choice of colors.
Jet black hair for instance is all the rage this year. Many celebrities have been sporting the jet black hair.
Megan Foxfor instance looks smoking hot with black straight hair

470_707229.jpg

Krysten Ritter really stole the spotlight in Breaking Bad due to her long chunky bangs, and near blue black straight hair.
.
Primarily when one thinks of black hair, they think of Goths; however black has taken on a whole new outlook, and it's not just a dark Gothic drab color. At least not anymore. Not when it comes to hair!

krysten-ritter-breaking-bad-11.jpg

Not only does it make a woman appear to be all the more mysteriously sexy, but it brings out her features like never before. Eyes stand out, skin color stands out, lip color stands out, and the striking, stand out look, is what every girl wants.
There are many levels of black you can work with too. You can go with jet black, which is pure black. You can go with dark black, which is a level warmer than jet black, or you can go with a reddish black which is a very, very dark chestnut like result.
Speaking of red heads, red hair is also back. In the past it was a color only Pippi Longstocking and Peggy Bundy would be caught wearing. In this day and age though red hair is hotter than it ever was before.
Now you don't want to go penny copper red, you want to keep it dark and gingery, that way it looks natural against your skin tone. Pop out red hair is still a fashion don't and likely always will be.

Top 5 Hot Hair Trends for Summer!

Posted by Angela Bronner Helm on May 21st 2009 10:04PM

1. HEADBANDS

This trend is twofold -- Headbands are a spectacular way to spice up a classic evening hair-do, think jewel-tones, crystals, ribbon and double bands, or, go boho a laNicole Richie. All are especially hot right now. Also, headbands are also a great way to avert a summer hair catastrophe. You can whisk humidity-laden frizz right off of your face during a work-out or simply a hot summer day and still be style conscious.

2. Bang it out with BANGS!

Don't shy away from this trend because you're having flash-backs of your 3rd grade class picture! Relax, there is a bang length for everyone. Bangs are a perfect way to switch up your look and frame your face without getting a drastic haircut, be it the classic fringe (check out Kim Kardashian or J.Lo) or a bang with a razored texture like Rihanna.

3. Keep cool with a PONYTAIL!

Ponytails were all over the runways for Spring '09. This trend will definitely carry over into summer. Don't get spooked by the stiff, slicked-back, head-ache rendering ponytails of the past! Think volume with a slight pouf at the crown like the trendsetting Ms. Beyonce wore while promoting her new album. You can incorporate headbangs and bangs to create a fab ponytail that everyone will envy!

4. Long luxurious WAVES!

Now we ladies have all yearned for those long, luscious Alicia Keys waves....but now back to reality! Most of us are growing out last season's hot trend: that Victoria Beckham bob. Soooo, never fear....clip in hair is here!! I know you didn't think that all those celebrities didn't cheat a little bit. Well now you can too. Zuri makes an excellent inexpensive human hair "fall" that will keep your friends guessing.

I've saved the best for last.........

5. Rich, warm yummy COLOR!

Say good bye to the brassy blonde "streaks" from last summer, because you're probably still trying to repair the damage that hi-lites wreaked on your relaxed hair. Kiss those cool ashy winter tones farewell and usher in some warm all-over color and brighten up your face. Think golden browns, rich golden reds and sunny Mary J. blondes.

Hair Color and Eye Color Statistical data from a German sample

In most parts of the world there is almost no variation in hair color and in eye color. Europeans (or people of European ancestry), however, show a great variety in these physical traits.
The current page provides some statistical data on the co-occurence of different hair and eye colors in a German sample.

The results are based on an ongoing online survey on hair color preferences, and they are based on a sample of more than 9.000 German respondents (27 per cent males and 73 per cent females).

Within each row the percentages add up to 100 per cent

TOP 10 HAIR COLOR MYTHS DEBUNKED - TRUTH OR FICTION?

1. For the best color advice, talk to your friends.

Fiction: Most women surveyed - 69% - said that they got most of their hair color advice from a colorist/stylist. From the remaining women surveyed, 4% chose to get most advice from a friend and 7% percent chose articles in magazines.

Having a consultation with your colorist is crucial as he or she is the most knowledgeable source in hair color theory and can give the best recommendations on which color complements your skin tone, eye color, fashion style, and personality.

2. Highlights are taking the salon industry by storm.

Truth: 46% of women surveyed chose highlighting as the service they most frequently request at the salon, over full-head haircolor at 35%, fashion/bold color accents at 4% and color gloss/glaze at 1%.

Be sure to ask your colorist about the latest techniques, as trends and color services are constantly evolving along with the folks at Wella.

3. Coloring your hair makes it appear less healthy.

Fiction: Actually, coloring your hair can add a lot of benefits including leaving hair shinier (91% of women surveyed agreed) and well-conditioned (89% of women surveyed agreed). Plus, 29% of women surveyed said the overall health of their hair was actually healthier after hair coloring. Only a professional colorist knows how to best apply color correctly in order to leave your hair shiny and beautiful.

4. The main reason women don’t color their hair is because they don’t want to change their natural color.

Truth: 55% of women surveyed said they haven’t colored their hair in the past year because they like their natural hair color. Only 3% said they don’t color because they have no gray to cover.

However, if you love your natural haircolor, that’s all the more reason to get a professional service to enhance it! Everyone can benefit from a demi-permanent color, such as Wella Professionals Color Touch, because its gentle formula actually leaves hair shinier and well conditioned, thus enhancing your natural color and improving the condition of your hair.

Additionally, it doesn’t leave a demarcation line because it washes out.

5. Consumers don’t know the difference between semi, demi and permanent hair color.

Truth: 47% of women surveyed said they didn’t know the difference. However, knowing what to ask from your stylist or colorist at the salon makes the difference between fabulous color - or months of regret.

Semi permanent can last 1-3 weeks, demi permanent can last 4-6 weeks, and permanent is, well, permanent and lasts until it grows out. So a proper consultation process is important to determine what you’re looking for out of your color treatment.

6. Consumers don’t think it’s important to get to know their colorist.

Fiction: Actually 73% of women surveyed think it’s important for their colorist to know their personality and to make small talk at their appointments.

In fact, 38% of women surveyed even said that if they were throwing a party, they would invite their colorist/stylist!

The more your colorist gets to know you and your style, the more insight they‘ll have on what you might like, what color will be easiest to maintain, and what best suits your lifestyle.

7. Professional products designed for color-treated hair help maintain color between salon visits.

Truth: 79% of women surveyed agreed that professional products will help keep haircolor from fading in between salon visits. Wella Professionals Color Preserve Care and Styling collection protects and preserves up to 78% more haircolor (as compared to leading professional products).

8. Everyone must color their hair every four weeks.

Fiction: 22% of women surveyed color their hair every 2 to 3 months and 18% of women said they color every 4 to 6 months.

It really depends on individual hair color needs, the level of technique performed on the hair, and whether you’re using a semi, demi or permanent color.

For example, natural looking highlights often require more frequent maintenance than single process color. (On average, colorists may recommend follow-up visits every 6-8 weeks in order to keep color looking fresh and natural.)

9. Celebrities and magazines are most influential in what new service or technique consumers try.

Fiction: 74% of women surveyed said that a recommendation from a stylist or colorist would be the most influential in determining if they tried something new.

A good number of stylists and colorists attend educational seminars, which means they are constantly learning new techniques and gaining knowledge on the latest trends.

Who do you think styles celebrities in the first place? They don’t color their own hair, that’s for sure!

In order to stay ahead of the trends, professional stylists and colorists can enroll in Wella trend and styling seminars at The Studio, now open in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. [www.thestudioeducation.com]

10. Haircolor can make you feel better about your appearance.

Truth: 69% of women surveyed said they feel attractive immediately after having their hair colored and 61% feel confident. Whether you’re changing your hue to something more bold and adventurous or just touching up the roots, hair color adds richness and vibrancy so that your hair appears healthy and shiny, making everyone around you take a second look.
